SHORT ANSWER

What matters before you decide

A servicing transfer changes who collects and administers payments. It does not by itself rewrite the loan contract. Verify both notices through established contact details, reconcile the last old statement with the first new one, and confirm what happens to automatic payments before the next due date.

  • Verify both servicers independently.
  • Save transfer notices and payment receipts.
  • Reconcile principal, escrow and pending arrangements.
  • Confirm automatic payments before the due date.

Authenticate the change before redirecting money

Keep the transfer notices and effective date together. Contact the existing servicer using the number on a previous statement, then independently verify the new servicer. An urgent email with replacement bank details is not sufficient evidence. Ask where payments go before and after the effective date and whether the existing automatic debit will stop or transfer. Avoid a duplicate debit while also avoiding a missed installment.

Reconcile more than the principal balance

Compare outstanding principal, interest rate, due date, escrow balance, payment history and any outstanding fees. Keep evidence of pending tax and insurance bills: a transferred escrow balance does not prove that a particular bill was paid. If a modification, repayment arrangement or complaint was open, ask the new servicer to confirm its status in writing and attach the existing documents rather than assuming the history is complete.

Understand the transfer protection correctly

Federal servicing rules provide a 60-day period beginning on the effective transfer date during which a timely payment received by the old servicer cannot be treated as late by the new one for the specified purposes. This is not permission to stop paying. Keep the payment receipt and delivery date. Report a discrepancy promptly through the servicer’s designated error-resolution channel, with the account, dates and exact correction requested.

Frequently asked questions

01Does a transfer change my interest rate?

A servicing transfer alone does not change the contractual rate. A scheduled adjustable-rate change is a separate event that should be explained against the loan terms.

02Should I stop paying during the transition?

No. Confirm the proper recipient and continue timely payments. The transfer protection concerns qualifying payments received by the old servicer, not an unpaid installment.
